Depois de muita controvérsia, acesa discussão e acalorado debate, Obama discursa perante a comunidade escolar norte americana, à semelhança do que já fizeram Ronald Regan e George H. Bush.

A questão podia ser delicada quando ainda não se conhecia o conteúdo do discurso, mas uma vez divulgado previamente o texto, no site da Casa Branca, não vejo razões para apreensão ou receios de afrontas ideológicas. Os infundados temores de evangelização, doutrinação ou planfletismo liberal darão lugar, na minha opinião, a um consenso nacional para com os princípios e os ideais aí expressos e desenvolvidos.

Na realidade trata-se de um discurso bastante bem escrito, genuíno, transparente, com passagens sobre a experiência pessoal de Obama. Trata-se, na minha opinião, de mais um exemplo de liberdade, de nacionalismo, de consciência do país e da sua grandeza, mas também de credibilidade, de apologia do esforço, de compensação pelo mérito, de aposta no trabalho, de confiança no sistema de ensino e nas capacidades daqueles que o conduzem.

Como por exemplo: “… no matter what you want to do with your life – I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You’re going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You can’t drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You’ve got to work for it and train for it and learn for it. And this isn’t just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. What you’re learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future”.
Passagens como “Where you are right now doesn’t have to determine where you’ll end up. No one’s written your destiny for you. Here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future”, constituem o exemplo da largueza de visão deste povo e, sobretudo, da ousadia confiante que depositam no futuro de um país.

Esta é também uma mensagem de humildade e de esperança, digna dos que são grandes, característica dos que não temem a concorrência, apanágio dos que são mesmo bons.

Mais um discurso brilhante de Barack Obama, exemplo também do respeito pela diferença, da tolerância perante os que pensam de outra forma. Muitas escolas optaram por não transmitir esta intervenção do Presidente, uma decisão polémica mas consciente. Só num país livre e democrático é tolerável uma atitude deste tipo. Já imaginaram o que seria se acontecesse em Portugal!

Infelizmente, não me parece sequer praticável um discurso desta natureza entre nós. A nossa actual classe política e dirigente não tem a estatura moral, a credibilidade, os princípios éticos, não tem o passado, nem o futuro, nem a experiência pessoal à altura deste discurso.
